Racing Post for phone

'Racing Post for iPhone' is the Racing Post's flagship app. Users can study a racecard, place a bet, watch the race and view the result all in one place. The app also allows users to follow all the latest news from the Racing Post and access additional editorial content from the top Stories and Videos pages. 'Racing Post for iPhone' currently holds a user rating of four and a half stars from over 17,000 App Store reviews and can be downloaded here.

After becoming the designer at 'Racing Post Mobile' one of the first tasks given to me was to redesign 'Racing Post for iPhone'. The app hadn't been updated since its initial release in 2009 and the move from iOS6 to the flatter, brighter iOS7 meant that a stylistic overhaul was required.

The redesign's main focus was on refining existing page layouts and improving existing user journeys without disrupting the essential, familiar elements of the app. Attempts were made to only refine existing iOS7 design models in an effort to make the transition to any future iOS updates go as smoothly as possible. In addition to revamping the aesthetics of 'Racing Post for iPhone' I also used the redesign as an opportunity to introduce some new features scheduled to be designed for the app, these included a bookmaker sign-in journey, a race-info scroller and the 'multiple betting' mode.

Above is a user journey created to illustrate a new feature I designed for the app. Image one is an early design made to outline the feature to my colleagues and image two is a later iteration made to instruct a developer on how to construct it. At a later stage a video will also be provided if any transitional animations need to be illustrated.

Once visual designs were created we were able to conduct usability tests using a basic live prototype. Sets of users were observed interacting with the prototypes and refinements were made before high-fidelity prototypes were created. Once again these were tested within a lab setting and additional refinements were made.

Above are some of the 100+ individual page designs that I created for 'Racing Post for iPhone'. I used a limited number of colours and design models to try and establish a sense of continuity throughout the app.

As part of a team of designers I was tasked with redesigning the 'Racing Post for Android' app. The previous version had been created quickly and was largely based on its iOS equivalent, so a design better suited to the OS was needed. The app now holds a rating of four and a half stars and is available to download here.

Racing Post Daily Edition

The 'Racing Post Daily Edition' is the award-winning digital newspaper app from Racing Post. As well as providing the paper's editorial content on your iPad, 'Daily Edition' gives users the ability to bet on the day's races, study form and receive additional data. The app also allows the ability to record every race, follow the latest updates with a live news feed and organise notifications on your favourite races and horses.

The bet slip overlay lets users place a bet without leaving the page they're reading.

Although my influence on 'Daily Edition' began after the initial iteration had been designed, I was responsible for numerous additions and alterations to the app. The designs above illustrate these additions which include a new multiple betting mode, a user subscription journey and the integration of a new bookmaker to layout based on user feedback and a partial redesign to bring the app in line with iOS7.
To promote 'Daily Edition' we ran a promotion campaign, I collaborated on this advert by supplying on-screen footage that was later incorporated into the video, produced by the animation company 'Gas&Electric'.
